Summer DemSem 2023

Data Visualization

The Center for Demography & Ecology and the Center for Demography of Health and Aging are pleased to announce Summer DemSem 2023 – a two day workshop featuring a variety of speakers, trainings, and workshops for CDE graduate students May 16th-17th, 2023! This year’s theme – Data Visualization – will center on critical engagement with design principles and data visualization, as well as practical utilization and application of R to represent data through a variety of graphics and animations. Please bring your own laptop!

CDE & CDHA Graduate Student Trainees are required to attend; all from the CDE & CDHA community are welcome! Registration for this event has closed.

Day 0: Monday, May 15th, 2023

9am-12pm: Introduction to R (Jason Struck, Statistical Consultant, SSCC) in 5208 Sewell Social Science Building

Day 1: Tuesday, May 16th, 2023

Breakfast will be served beginning at 9:30am

10am-12pm: General Design Principles of Data Visualization (Mandy Morrow, Associate Director, UW Design Lab) in 8417 Sewell Social Science Building

1:00-2:30pm: Ethics in Research: Data Literacy & Visualization (Thomas Durkin, Social/Social Work Librarian, Jennifer Patiño, Data and Digital Scholarship Librarian, and Heather Shimon, Science and Engineering Librarian, UW Libraries) in 8417 Sewell Social Science Building

2:45-4:00pm: Social Hour at the Terrace (No host, entire CDE & CDHA community welcome!) at the Memorial Union Terrace!

Day 2: Wednesday, May 17th, 2023

Breakfast will be served beginning at 9:30am

10am-12pm: Data Visualization in R: with ggplot2 Basics (Jason Struck, Statistical Consultant, SSCC) in 8417 Sewell Social Science Building

1:00-2:30pm: Adding Contextual Data and Improving Reproducibility with R (Nathan Jones, UWSC) in 8417 Sewell Social Science Building

3:00-4:00pm: Guided Tour of re:emancipation (Museum Guides Matiasse Enos Kambandu Schilz, Becca Owen, Claudia Carlson, and Elizabeth Allman, Chazen Museum) at the Chazen Museum!
